What's Happening at the Flying L PUD

In an effort to create better understanding within the community, we are resuming our newsletters which will go out every couple of months. The better the communication and understanding about what is being done, the better the cooperation among everyone will be.
Also, we have put in place a new alert system where we can get information to all residents very quickly in the event of an issue. This system will send texts messages, emails and even call you if you have a land line. In the system we only have one phone number and one email address. If you wish to add your husband or wife to our list, please send an email to: Admin@FlyingLPUD.com

Poor Water Pressure

You may have noticed a drop in water pressure this past week. We are conducting long over due maintenance on our Hydro Pressure Tanks that provides water pressure to the ranch. These tanks are the big sausage looking tanks laying on their side in the picture above. One of the tanks was shut down, sand blasted on the inside and painted. Only one tank is operational at this time. We will then do the same on the other tank. Once the paint is applied, it needs to cure for about a week before it can be put back into service. However, the problem is this damp and humid weather we are having is stretching out the curing process. So this total process will take about three weeks. Thanks for your patience.

Back up Water Supply

The Flying L has two water wells. However, one is not producing enough water to supply the ranch should the main well go down. A little history. Well #1 is across from the tennis courts and was drilled about 50 years ago. About 20 years or so ago, the pump broke off and pieces of the pipe lodged in the well, almost 400' below the surface. They tried to fish it out back then but were unsuccessful.
They were able to lower a 2” pump past the lodged pieces of pipe and it has been pumping best it can for all these years. However, with the growth we have seen in the Flying L, there is no way that 2” pump will service the community should there be a problem with the main well off Bottle Springs Road. So essentially, we have been operating without a back-up water supply.
We tried last week to fish out those pieces of pipe but again, we were unsuccessful. There was some debris on the pump, so it should work better now but still, this well is not a viable back-up option for our community. The PUD will start the permitting process to drill a new well. There are federal funds available for these kinds of projects and we have started that process as well.

Our Water Levels

With the drought and water restrictions in place, there is concern about our water levels in the community. We are blessed with an excellent water source. Here are some facts. Our two wells are 800' deep each. Both pumps sit at 570' and 580' below the surface. Our current water level is at 320’ below the surface.
So in other words, our pumps are 250’ below the surface of the water. This is great news!! However, there are two things to remember. Our water level has dropped about 100' during this drought and secondly, as the golf course ramps up, they are drawing a large amount of water out of the same water source.

Fire Hydrants

Last month, all hydrants underwent their annual inspection. All hydrants are functioning and operational. The second thing we did was test the flow of each hydrant. Based on the flow, the bonnet of each hydrant will need to be painted based on that flow. All hydrants will have a red body but you will start to see different colors on the bonnets designating the flow from each.

Community Involvement

It is disappointing to hear about discontent within the community. The PUD board welcomes anyone who would like to get involved either as a board member or on various other projects. The PUD team is working hard to support the residents and we would be happy to give anyone interested a tour of the operation.
Also remember, if you are having any issue with water quality or services we are here to fix it. There is not a problem that cannot be solved.
